Hybrid Auxetic Structures: Structural Optimization and Mechanical Characterization

With their increased energy absorption capacity, auxetic materials are perfectly fit to develop new, enhanced lightweight crash absorbers for cars. Herein, the mass distribution along struts is optimized via finite element analysis with a parameterized optimization. Four different unit cells taken from literature and parameterize, models simulate, specific capacity optimizes. The two highest then selected experimental investigation produced by additive manufacturing polymer. To further enhance mechanical properties, specimens electrochemically coated nickel polymer molten out pyrolysis. Those Ni/polymer hybrids subjected quasistatic dynamic impact experiments. Only small strain rate sensitivity can be detected under loading, namely, higher plastic collapse plateau stress. hollow folding instead of bending, which render them much weaker than predicted simulation. In conclusion, it possible improve existing absorber elements tailored hybrid structures. They absorb amounts without changing stiffness loading while saving cost.
